Friday Freebie: Letter Formation Activities & Printable

Hello Reader,

We are finishing our handwriting series with some letter formation activity ideas and a link to a free printable.

16 Fun Hands-On Letter Formation Activities

Teaching correct letter formations from the beginning can have many positive benefits for children including improving visual-memory skills and letter recognition, motor planning for how to form the letters, decreasing letter reversals, and improving handwriting speed and legibility.

Research has also shown that children who learn to form letters correctly, activate neural pathways that promote strong reading skills (James & Berninger, 2019).

Consistency in letter formation is easier to teach when you pick a way to describe how to write a letter. Not only will the child associate how to write the letter by seeing it written (copying or tracing), but it also provides auditory feedback on how to form the letters. This helps them verbally and visually to practice the motor planning needed for each letter.

While working in the school system, I often heard my students repeating the letter formation wording to themselves as they practiced.
